Jordan slams Israel's approval of new settlement, land grab

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan Saturday strongly denounced the Israeli cabinet's approval to build a new Jewish settlement and expropriate hundreds of dunums of Palestinian-owned lands in the occupied West Bank.

State Minister for Media Affairs and official government spokesperson Mohammad Momani said Thursday's decision is "a flagrant aggression" against the rights of the Palestinian people, particularly its right to set up its independent state on its national soil along the 4th of June, 1967, borders.

The Israeli move, he warned, would deal a blow to efforts to revive the peace process to end the conflict and also feed the environment in which the forces of extremism and terrorism thrive.

"This decision contravenes international legitimacy resolutions and the international law, namely UN Security Council resolution 2334, which was passed on Dec. 23, 2016", Momani pointed out.

The Israeli move, he further said, is in contrast with the fundamentals of the peace process and the responsibilities of the power of occupation, and undermines the two-state solution and efforts to bring about regional peace.

He called for a concerted effort by the international community to stand up against Israel's "irresponsible" expansionist policies, implement UN resolutions, halt unilateral Israeli moves and provocations and resume negotiations to reach a just and comprehensive peace that paves the way for the creation of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
