Egypt receives over 300 smuggled artefacts from Jordan

25-12-2016 01:24 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities said it received on Sunday 340 artefacts that were smuggled out of the country and intercepted by Jordanian customs last year.

Jordanian authorities had informed their Egyptian counterparts in late 2015 that the artefacts were discovered in a shipment that arrived from the Red Sea port of Nuweiba, according to Shaaban Abdel-Gawad, the head of the ministry's Antiquities Department.

"The artefacts, which include stone statues and ancient coins, will be sent to the Egyptian Museum's depot for renovation," Abdel-Gawad added.

The Jordanian and Egyptian governments signed in 2015 an agreement of joint cooperation to conserve and recover stolen cultural properties and combat illegal trade in artefacts.
