Tarawneh elected as House speaker

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - -Deputy Atef Tarawneh was elected on Monday by his peers as the Lower House speaker in a vote that followed the opening of the legislature's ordinary session by His Majesty King Abdullah II.

Tarawneh won 69 votes during the balloting, well ahead of his closest contender, Abdul Karim Dughmi, who secured 34 votes and Abdullah Al Akayleh who won 21 votes.

A total of 129 deputies, out of 130 participated in the vote; 4 ballots were cancelled, while 1 was found blank.

Delivering a speech after being named a speaker by Fawzi Tueima, the deputy with the longest membership, Tarawneh pledged continued cooperation with all parties to serve the nation and achieve the envisioned reform.

He said that the House will continue the legislative reforms started by the previous Lower House through endorsing the elections, political parties, municipalities and decentralizations laws.

The speaker said that revisiting economic legislation in cooperation with all sectors will enhance the comprehensive reform march.

Prime Minister Hani Mulki congratulated Tarawneh in his name and on behalf of the Cabinet members for being elected as House speaker, and affirmed keenness to continue cooperation and partnership with the legislative authority.

Mulki voiced the government's readiness to present its policy statement to the Lower House of Parliament on the date set by the House in line with Article 53 of the Constitution.

The Lower House convened its first session under the deputy with the longest membership Fawzi Tueima, during which Royal Decree on postponing the Parliament's ordinary session and summoning the Parliament to meet in an ordinary session as of Monday, November7, 2016, were read.

The House is expected to elect on Tuesday, members of the permanent office.
