Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah II Sunday underlined the need to further build on human rights achievements Jordan had made, and enhance society's awareness on the issue "in a manner compatible with the Kingdom's advanced status in this field". He told National Centre For Human Rights Chairman of the Board of Trustees (NCHR), Mohammad Adnan Al Bakhit, who handed him a copy of the 2015 annual report on the condition of human rights in Jordan, of the importance of benefiting from the centre's recommendations "to build on them in a way to achieve justice and equality among all".
The King also called for a continually cooperative relationship between the government and NCHR for a speedy implementation of the 2016-2025 national human rights plan.
He also praised the rights watchdog's efforts "in following up on the state of human rights and relevant issues with utmost neutrality", stressing the need to develop and build the centre's capacity to carry out its tasks according to world-class standards.
During the audience, attended by Commissioner General for Human Rights, Mousa Breizat, the NCHR chief outlined the key areas tackled by the report as well as the approach taken to monitor and address notes it had received, and the way to pass these to the competent authorities.
Bakhit told Petra after the meeting that the report was submitted to coincide with the publication of the King's Sixth Discussion Paper, which addresses key national issues, particularly "at this stage in the life of the state".
"This year's report is characterised with optimism, not pessimism, despite the tough surrounding circumstances. We managed to keep the torch alight and held high devoid of slogans, and also uphold the land and faith and the constants of the constitution", he said.
Bakhit said he discussed with the King cooperation mechanisms between the NCHR and government agencies, and the need to interact with the street and gain access to people.
