Energy minister, Algerian counterpart discuss cooperation

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ibrahim Saif, and his Algerian counterpart Noureddine Boutarfa discussed challenges Jordan is facing in the energy sector, according to a Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources statement issued on Friday.

Saif highlighted financial, economic and social consequences Jordan has to endure as a result of the high energy costs, the government's efforts to diversify different energy sources and focusing on new technologies in various fields of energy.

During their participation in the World Energy Congress held recently in Istanbul, the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy and importing liquefied natural gas from Algeria, as part of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries in 2015.

Algeria's energy minister said his country will provide a quote for supplying the Kingdom with liquefied natural gas to cover part of the National Electric Power Company's (NEPCO) needs of liquefied natural gas, through the Algerian government-owned company Sonatrach.

They also discussed exchanging of expertise in the field of oil shale, oil and gas exploration and benefiting from expertise and capabilities from both sides, through exchanging visits between experts in the two countries.

The Kingdom needs of natural gas exceed 5 billion cubic meters, and Algeria could submit bids for additional quantities NEPCO needs. Also, reaching a positive outcome in the negotiations would lead to diversify sources of natural gas supply in Jordan.
