Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) recently concluded a shelter project in host communities in northern Jordan.
Funded by the British Department for International Development (DfID) since October 2013, the project has benefited close to 5,600 Syrian refugees.
The project is part of a broader initiative also supported by the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (BPRM) and the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).
Through financial incentives and technical support provided by NRC, Jordanian landlords were able to complete 5,586 semi-constructed housing units across Irbid, Jerash and Ajloun governorates. In return, more than 20,000 vulnerable Syrian refugees, identified by NRC, benefited from rent-free accommodation in the completed housing units for a fixed period of time agreed with the Jordanian landlords.
NRC’s Shelter Specialist, Elias Jourdi, explained that NRC’s Urban Shelter Project has responded to the lack of available adequate housing in the project areas and addressed shelter needs of approximately 13% of all registered Syrian refugee population across Irbid, Jerash and Ajloun governorates.
He added: "NRC continues to coordinate with all actors to advocate for scaling up of the shelter response in Jordan to support the immediate humanitarian needs of Syrian refugees and to strengthen the resilience of Jordanian host communities." To date, NRC has worked in 142 locations across Irbid, Jerash and Ajloun governorates and has supported more than 1,200 Jordanian landlords.
