Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - A Turkish parliamentary delegation said that last month’s defeated coup attempt in Turkey has showed unity among the Turkish people.
The Turkish delegation arrived in the Jordanian capital Amman on Wednesday to brief the public opinion on the coup bid and the dangers posed by the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) led by Fetullah Gulen, the head of the terrorist group.
“The coup bid has been thwarted, thanks to the unity of the Turkish people,” Turkish lawmaker Ali Ercoskun told reporters on Friday.
“The coup attempt has showed that there is no difference between FETO, Daesh and other terrorist organizations in the world,” he said.
On July 15, a renegade faction within Turkey’s military attempted to overthrow the country’s democratically-elected government. Widely believed to have been orchestrated by Gulen and his followers, the failed putsch left at least 240 martyrs in its wake.
Gulen is also accused of conducting a long-running campaign to overthrow the Turkish government through the infiltration of state institutions especially the military, police and judiciary with the aim of creating a "parallel state".
Ercoskun said the Turkish people have taken to the streets in 81 Turkish cities in support of the democratically-elected government. “Around 1.5 million people have taken part in these rallies,” he added.
Opposition MP Altan Tan, for his part, said that had the coup bid had succeeded, Turkey would have fallen into a civil war. “All parties have united for the sake of the homeland,” he said.
