Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordanian officials stopped a wedding of a 14-year-old Syrian girl to a 50-year-old Jordanian man.
According to Jordanian Media , the women's received a complaint about a man wanting to marry his underage niece to an Arab man in return of cash. The complaint further detailed that the marriage would take place without being attested in the court, as child marriage is against the Jordanian law.
After informing the family protection unit, the criminal investigation unit immediately dispatched to the location and stopped the wedding on the spot.
The girl now is being psychologically treated and is under custody of the family protection unit until she is able to mix with her community again. The man is in custody.
According to the latest statistics, 35% of underage marriages in Jordan involve Syrian girls. An increasing number of marriages for girls under 15 years old has been reported in the past year, which is against Jordanian law.
