Prince Zeid Bin Ra’ad urges Iran to halt death penalty against spiritual figure

05-08-2015 11:47 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS -UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Prince Zeid Bin Ra’ad, Wednesday, voiced his deep concern over Iran's death penalty against Mohammad Ali Taheri, a writer, founder of the spiritual movement Erfan e-Halgheh (Inter-Universalism), and practitioner of alternative medicine theories used in Iran and abroad.

Taheri was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court on Saturday on a charge of "fesad fel arz" (corruption on earth), Prince Zeid said.

He called on Iranian authorities to immediately withdraw charges against Taheri and ensure his unconditional release, adding that Iran's longtime use of executions is "problematic", as it had carried out many executions for drug offences, some for crimes committed as minors, as well as cases with "broad, ill-defined charges".
