King, Saudi deputy crown prince hold talks on ties, Mideast issues

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah II on Tuesday held talks with Saudi deputy crown prince and minister of defense, Muhammad bin Salman bin Abdul Aziz, on ways to cement Jordanian-Saudi relations and a number of Middle East issues.

The meeting agreed on enhancing strategic political, economic and military cooperation between the two countries, according to a joint statement issued following the talks.

King Abdullah and Prince Muhammad, who is also deputy prime minister, emphasized the importance of joint action to fight terrorism to safeguard Islam’s principles and defend the region and its peoples.

They stressed that the security and safety of both countries is part and parcel, the statement added.

The talks dealt with the ongoing crisis in Syria and emphasized the need to find a solution that brings about security to the Syrian people and guarantees its rights.

They also discussed Yemen’s and efforts by the Saudi Arabia-led Arab coalition in response to Yemen’s legitimate government to defend the Yemeni people and achieve stability in that Arab country.

The meeting touched on Jordan’s efforts to host a massive number of Syrian refugees and called for further international assistance to Jordan to help the Kingdom grapple with this burden.

The King and Prince Muhammad stressed the importance of preserving the security and unity of Iraq, calling for engaging all components of the Iraqi people in the political process to defend their country and build Iraq's institutions.

They also voiced rejection over Iran's attempts to interfere in Arab countries' internal affairs to undermine their security, stressing the need to avoid interference in other countries' internal affairs in accordance with international norms.

The King and Prince Muhammad stressed the need to push the peace process forward based on the international terms of reference as well as the Arab Peace Initiative so as to help the Palestinian people establish their independent and fully sovereign state.

On bilateral ties, King Abdullah valued the Saudi support for Jordan's economy and its contributions to carrying out developmental projects in the kingdom. Prince Muhammad voiced King Salman Bin Abdulaziz's keenness to enhance ties with Jordan and launch joint investment opportunities to serve both countries' interests.

Upon departure, Prince Muhammad was seen off by His Majesty King Abdullah, prince Faisal and other senior officials.
