Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - A Jordanian man held in custody in Saudi Arabia three years beyond his sentence has been awarded SR3.34m ($890,000) in compensation, according to Al Madinah newspaper.
However, his lawyer, Muhammad Al Thali, said he would appeal the verdict to seek a higher pay out.
The man had been convicted of forging documents and invoices and in 2010 was sentenced to a year in jail.
However, officials at Jeddah Administrative Court refused to release him in 2011 because his name was on a list of prisoners due to be deported at the end of their sentence.
Al Thali said prison officials had illegally kept his client in jail while awaiting deportation.
“The verdict issued by the court doesn’t satisfy my client because it did not compensate him for the last year he spend in prison after serving his term,” he was quoted by the newspaper as saying.
“I’ll challenge the verdict and demand SR15,000 for each additional day my client spent in the cell. This will be a total of SR15.75 million.”
