Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - U.S. Ambassador Alice G. Wells conducted site visits today to witness the transparent and efficient way in which Jordanians have been transforming their access to clean water and sanitation through a five-year grant of $275 million provided by the U.S. government.

The grant’s projects, funded through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), include nearly 800 km of new water pipelines that will reduce water losses and provide the basis for better management of Jordan’s scarce water resources. In addition, nearly 300 km of wastewater pipelines are under construction that will significantly reduce sewage overflows and provide for a healthier environment.

Moreover, the expansion of the As-Samra Wastewater Treatment Plant, in partnership with the private sector and the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, will benefit Jordan by recycling its waste water for use in agriculture. When completed, the As-Samra expansion will produce 134 million cubic meters of clean water per year - over 15% of Jordan’s entire annual water supply.

Ambassador Wells noted: “This is a great example of our partnership, allowing communities to witness the program’s implementation in an open and transparent way. I look forward to seeing the program’s investments help the people of Zarqa and Jordan enjoy happier, healthier and more productive lives.”
