Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - By: Anas Ali - Under a new rule, Jordanian authorities has refused to renew license tags for vehicles belonging to Syrians who took refuge in Amman. A number of refugees found themselves compelled to sell their cars "next to nothing."
Some car dealers and middleman saw an opportunity exploit the misery of these refugees, as " easy pray," who refuse to pay fair.
Jordan's Motor Vehicle authorities has limited the renewal of Syrian vehicle permits to rich investors only.
A victime of such exploitation told Ammon that he had to sell his car valued at $43,000 for $11,000. He lost his family's means of transportation.
Jordan's Motor Vehicle spokesman said that cars with expired Syrian tags are seized and sent to the Motor Vehicle impound facility. The cars remain there until they receive the new rules on what to do with the cars. The spokesman noted that " the Interior Ministry did not send any new instructions, and the " Syrian car" file remains with the Vehicle Customs Department. "
The trouble started when the Council of Ministers decided, on 17 March 2013, to stop permit renewal of cars with Syrian plates, except for the cars belonging to investors, based on the recommendation of the Ministry of Interior, Committee for Syrian affairs.
A Motor Vehicle source said there are more than 35, 000 cars in the streets of the kingdom.
