Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Hisham Soualqh - Yazan Alsmadi, a fourth-year PhD candidate in electrical and computer engineering, was awarded a 2014 Presidential Fellowship, the most competitive and prestigious scholarly recognition provided by The Ohio State University Graduate School.

The Presidential Fellowship recognizes outstanding scholarship and research ability and provides recipients with the opportunity to devote themselves to their dissertation research full time.

As a member of Prof . Longya Xu’s research group, Alsmadi is working on the integration of renewable energy resources into electric power grids. His specif focus, low-voltage ride-through of doubly-f ed induction generator wind turbines, finds immediate and practical application in electrical power generation by mega-watt wind turbines. His research results directly impact on the success of increasing the share of renewable energy in the power grid. His approach in research is seen as a significant advance in future renewable energy f or green and smart electric grid. In the last two decades, wind energy hasseen as one of the largest growths in renewable energy sector. Yazan’s research will contribute towards increasing the efficiency and reliability of large scale wind energy systems.

Alsmadi is the former president and department public relations officer of the first IEEE Graduate Student Body (GSB). In addition to IEEE-related seminars, he also organizes student panels f or both College of Engineering and ECE Department student visit days. He received the Distinguish Service Award at the IEEE Columbus Spring Awards Banquet in 2012 and 2013.

A native of Jordan, Alsmadi received a bachelor’s degree in electrical power engineering from
Yarmouk University, Jordan, in 2010, with academic distinction and f irst of class. He received the
Yarmouk University Presidential Award f or Academic Distinction in 2007. He worked as a visiting
scholar in 2009-2010 in the electrical engineering department at Ohio State University
