Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) Lassina Zerbo has said the 183 countries who are signatory to the treaty have selected Jordan to host a full scale simulation of an onsite inspection under the comprehensive CTBT.
Zerbo told Petra that the Kingdom had competed with Ukraine and Hungary to host the exercise, adding that Jordan’s selection was a result of the respect it enjoys amongst the international community and its commitment to international charters that prohibit the use of weapons of mass destruction.
He said that the CTBTO highly appreciates Jordan’s commitment to the organization's charter, noting that this enhances the Kingdom's credibility while seeking to acquire nuclear energy for peaceful use.
"The organization considers Jordan as a model for security, stability and moderation in the world and a country that is keen to bring about peace and stability in the world and the region in particular," Zerbo said, adding that Jordan's hosting of the exercise will encourage other countries in the region such as Egypt, Iran and Israel to sign the treaty and support negotiations between the organization and these countries to achieve this objective.
Zerbo stressed that the exercise will boost the technical and professional skills of Jordan’s experts in modern technology employed in this field.
In 1998, Jordan became the 20th signatory state to ratify the CTBT, which bans all nuclear explosions in all circumstances for military and civilian purposes.
