Kingdom witnesses annular solar eclipse Sunday

03-11-2013 11:46 AM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Majed Al Dabbas - Jordan witnessed annular solar eclipse on Sunday's afternoon, an astronomical expert said.

The annular solar eclipse started in Amman at 4: 14 pm, and end at 5:46 pm, Hani Dulaia, a member of the Jordanian Astronomical Society and an expert in the field, told Ammon News.

"The peak of the annular solar eclipse was at 5:00 pm , when 24 percent of the sun disk was obstructed" he added.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring Earth's view of the sun. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the moon's apparent diameter is smaller than the sun, causing the sun to look like an annulus (ring), blocking most of its light.
