The Interior minister Hussein Majali said on Tuesday that Jordan's efforts to deal with the repercussions of the Syrian crisis outpaced the limited resources of the Kingdom which was in dire need of international aid.
During a meeting with European Union (EU) ambassador Joanna Veronicka, he said the non-stop influx of a growing number of Syrian refugees had drained the Kingdom's already poor resources, stressing the desperate need for assistance from world nations and organisations to help the Kingdom overcome the repercussions of the crisis.
In addition to the economic, humanitarian, political and security impact of the Syrian conflict, Majali and the envoy also addressed the issue of Jordanian-EU ties and prospects for closer political and economic cooperation. The minister lauded the EU’s aid to Jordan, which had helped it to carry out reform and developmental programs.
Veronicka spoke of Jordan's important role in addressing many of the region's challenges, and hailed the Kingdom's "wise" policies to overcome internal and external challenges and deal with the Syrian crisis.
She noted the need to assist Jordan in its endeavours towards a "positive" handling of the Syrian crisis and extending help to the refugees despite the hard economic conditions, and pledged EU’s support to enable Jordan to address the fallout of the crisis.
