Foreign Minister participates in meeting on Syria

Ammon News - NEW YORK (Petra)Minister of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs Nasser Judeh affirmed the importance of meeting the needs of the Syrian refugees and their hosting countries .

He asserted that that it is of utmost importance to deal with the consequences of hosting refugees on the hosting countries on the long run.

Judeh’s statements came during Ministerial Consultation on the Humanitarian Situation in Syria and Neighbouring Countries, in New York yesterday on the sidelines of the 68th Regular Session of the UN General Assembly.

Judeh added that the situation in Syria is getting worse because the nature of the conflict is becoming sectarian which increases the level of violence in addition to the use of chemical weapons.

"We in Jordan are shouldering the largest consequences of this conflict, where we host 1,3 million Syrian refugees which counts for 11% of the kingdom's population", the Minister said.

He added that Za’atari refugee camp which was established a year ago is now the fourth-largest city in Jordan which is pausing huge pressures on the infrastructure and services." Despite all of this, we are still receiving Syrian refugees especially women and children," he further said.

Judeh called the international community to help in shouldering the responsibility of the Syrian refugees and in supporting their hosting countries.
