AMMONNEWS - Police in the northern governorate of Irbid foiled an attempt to smuggle ancient statues that date back to the Roman and Byzantine eras.
A security source told Ammon News that Preventative Security cadres arrested a man in possession of the basalt statues, which he was preparing to smuggle out of the country.
Irbid police received a tip-off on the man, who was offering the statues for sale for a "cheap price," the security source said, adding that after surveillance of the man, and discovering the hiding place of the statues, police raided the place and the arrest was made.
The Public Security Department (PSD) issued a statement confirming that the statues date back to Roman and Byzantine eras, noting that the ruins were inspected by an expert at the Public Antiquities Department who confirmed that the ancient basalt ruins are real and "priceless."
PSD added that the main suspect was arrested, and two others were apprehended suspected of attempting to help the man market the ancient statues.
The statues were returned to the Public Antiquities Department.
