Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - A Jordanian military official said on Saturday that cases of infiltration across the Jordanian-Syrian border surged over 200 percent this year compared to 2012.
Brigadier General Hussein Zyoud of the Jordanian Border Forces told Jordanian state television that attempts to infiltrate into Syria from Jordan and attempts to cross back into Jordan has increased over 200 %, with the majority of attempts being made by Syrian nationals.
With over 370 kilometers of shared borders between the two neighboring countries, there are nearly 40 illegal crossing points in which refugees and smugglers cross through.
Zyoud noted that smuggling operations from Syria into Jordan increased over 250 percent in 2013 compared to the preceding year.
Jordan hosts over 600,000 registered refugees in Jordan, in addition to hundreds of thousands more of Syrian nationals living in Jordanian towns and cities since the outbreak of violence in neighboring Syria.
