Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Long-time leader in the Jordan Muslim Brotherhood Nabil Kofahi announced on Saturday withdrawing his candidacy from the upcoming municipal elections race, which the Islamist movement vowed to boycott.
Dr. Kofahi told Ammon News on Saturday that he decided to withdraw his candidacy based on medical advise of doctors, considering his health.
In the past week, a number of leaders from the Jordan Muslim Brotherhood's "hawk" hardliner trend within the movement deliberated suspending the membership of the Islamist leader over his decision to run in the upcoming municipal elections, which the movement will be boycotting.
A Brotherhood official source, who did not want his name to be disclosed, told Ammon News that the consultations within the Hawks trend came after Dr. Nabil al-Kofahi, a long-time Brotherhood leader from the 'Doves,' or more moderate trend within the movement, announced his candidacy to run in the upcoming municipal election in Irbid governorate.
Kofahi's decision to run for candidacy violates the consensus decision taken by the Muslim Brotherhood to boycott the upcoming elections. Kofahi's decision is considered in violation of the movement's decision.
Kofahi is a longterm leader in the Muslim Brotherhood and its political arm, the Islamic Action Front party, and is one of the pioneers of the 'Zamzam' initiative for reform and development.
He previously headed the Greater Irbid municipality in previous elections.
