AMMAN — A fire erupted early Wednesday at a restaurant in Jabal Amman after a gas leak, with three kitchen walls collapsing due to the blaze, the Civil Defence Department (CDD) said.
CDD personnel evacuated the building and extinguished the fire. Except for material damage to an adjacent restaurant and some shops, in addition to several cars parked nearby, no one was injured, according to the CDD.
Muhannad Azzam, one of the Mijana Restaurant and Café employees, confirmed that the incident did not cause any injuries.
“We don’t know the main reason behind the incident, but a gas leak is probably one of the reasons,” he told The Jordan Times over the phone, adding that the incident took place at 5:30am.
The CDD said a gas leak in the kitchen was the main cause of the blaze.
Azzam said around five cars owned by the restaurant’s employees were damaged in the fire.
The 350-metre kitchen is located on the first floor of a four-storey building, according to a CDD statement made available to The Jordan Times.
Azzam noted that the kitchen, which overlooks Rainbow Street, was damaged, in addition to some of the restaurant’s chairs and tables.
“We are doing maintenance work now. There is a possibility that we will be able to resume working during the Eid Al Fitr holiday, which will begin next week,” he added.
