Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Zaatari camp for Syrian refugees in northeastern Jordan is set to be restructured into residential sections to better manage the camp that now houses over 165,000 Syrian refugees.
The Zaatari camp administration is completing a restructuring plan to divide the camp into residential sections to be named and labelled later, with each housing a maximum of 11,000 refugees.
The plan, set to go into effect before year's end, will appoint a "local" administration from within the camp, including representatives of the refugee community, to oversee the affairs of each residential section, particularly the services field, informed sources told Al Ghad daily newspaper.
An average of 165,000 currently reside in the camp, part of the over 600,000 registered Syrian refugees who entered the kingdom since the onset of the conflict in neighboring Syria over two years ago.
Meanwhile, the Syrian camps security services on Saturday foiled an attempt to smuggle large quantities of medicines from te Zaatari camp, a security source said.
Police seized 18 cartons of medications, attempted to be smuggled out of the camp and into Syria through the buses that transport Syrian refugees wishing to return to their country.
The group suspected of being involved in the plot to smuggle to medications were apprehended and questioned at the security center inside the camp.
It is noted that hundreds of Syrian refugees return to Syria daily, and are transported to the northern Syrian border in Jordanian military buses.
