Activists demand Omar al-Bashir’s arrest in Nigeria

16-07-2013 10:22 AM

Ammon News - (Al Arabiya) - Civil rights activists are demanding that Nigeria arrest Sudanese leader Omar al-Bashir and deliver him to the International Criminal Court to stand trial for crimes in Darfur.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project Monday urged President Goodluck Jonathan “to support the demand by the international community for justice for the victims of genocide and war crimes.”

They say that a failure to do so could have “huge legal ramifications,” though Chad and Djibouti have welcomed al-Bashir without any consequences.

The ICC indicted the Sudanese leader for crimes including extermination, forcible transfer of population, torture and rape.

Al-Bashir arrived in Nigeria Sunday to attend an African Union summit. The organization has told its 53 members not to cooperate with the ICC.
