Ammon News - AMMAN (Jordan Times) — The King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) launched its annual “Towards Life” campaign on Saturday in partnership with Zain.

The campaign enables the general public to contribute their sadaqa (alms paid voluntarily) to cancer patients receiving treatment at the King Hussein Cancer Centre (KHCC), according to a KHCF statement.

“This year marks the tenth consecutive year of partnership between KHCF and Zain through the Towards Life campaign,” the statement said, adding that the telecom operator donated JD50,000 to the KHCF in celebration of this occasion.

HH Princess Dina Mired, KHCF director general, emphasised the importance of this campaign.

“I urge every Zain subscriber to participate in the ‘Towards Life’ campaign to benefit underprivileged cancer patients at [the] KHCC and to help save a life,” the statement quoted her as saying.

The Towards Life campaign provides the opportunity for sadaqa contributions to be made during the holy month of Ramadan and until the end of the year by sending a short SMS message with the word “Life” to 97070 via Zain.

With each message, JD1 will be donated to the foundation. Zakat (Islamic tax on income) contributions can also be made during Ramadan by calling the KHCF at 0790161616 or 06-5544960, the statement said.

The Towards Life campaign runs concurrently with the zakat campaign, launched by the foundation at the start of Ramadan every year under the slogan “Your Zakat… My Life”.

The campaign encourages Muslims to donate their zakat to the foundation to benefit underprivileged patients in need of treatment at the KHCC.

The KHCF received an official fatwa (Islamic religious edict) from the Jordanian Fatwa Council in 2006 qualifying the foundation as a recipient of zakat.

The council also issued another fatwa in 2011, considering any donations towards supporting the new expansion currently under construction at the KHCC as an ongoing sadaqa.
