UN expert: "Jordan is committed to international standards to safeguard Kingdom's nuclear security"

01-07-2013 10:22 AM

Ammon News - AMMAN (Petra) - An expert at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed Jordan's commitment to international standards in putting in place the same safety requirements applied globally, especially the ratification of the Convention on Nuclear Safety.

In a press conference, Head of the Safety Assessment Section in the Division of Nuclear Installation Safety at IAEA, Peter Hughes, said on Sunday that Jordan is an active member of the Regulatory Cooperation Forum (RCF) to assist in the development of effectively independent and robust nuclear safety regulatory bodies in countries seeking to acquire nuclear technology for civilian use.

Hughes noted that Jordan has been able to absorb the concept of nuclear safety by developing human resources working in this field, while benefiting from international expertise in nuclear safety and security.

He pointed out that Jordan has shown an excellent willingness to understand and tackle these issues before taking any decision regarding building nuclear energy reactors.
