Ammon News - AMMAN (Petra)--Lower House Speaker Saad Hayel Srour met on Thursday with an Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) mission currently visiting the Kingdom to check on conditions of Syrian refugees in the Kingdom.
Srour said Jordan is shouldering an increasing burden due to the continued influx of Syrian refugees, who put tremendous pressure on the education, health, water, labour, and energy sectors, as well as on the country's infrastructure.
The speaker expressed his appreciation of the Arab and international relief aid provided to the refugees and urged the international community to continue its relief efforts to enable Jordan to continue its services to the refugees.
He also highlighted the need for the international community to continue its efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis that ends the bloodshed, preserves Syria's unity and enables the refugees to return to their country.
Members of the delegation praised Jordan's role in hosting thousands of Syrian refugees and providing them with services, despite its limited resources.
The field mission to Jordan follows the adoption of an emergency resolution at the 128th IPU Assembly in Ecuador in March 2013 on the Syrian refugee crisis, and a UNHCR briefing to the IPU’s International Humanitarian Law Committee.
Findings from the mission will be reported to the IPU membership at IPU’s next assembly in Geneva in October 2013.
