AMMAN — The Lower House on Wednesday started deliberations over the draft social security law, amid conflicting views on whether the labour minister should chair the Social Security Corporation (SSC).
The deputies discussed the first part of the temporary law at length, with some arguing for granting the SSC independence from the government.
Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour said it was not justified to have the SSC as an independent body, stressing that the government guarantees the corporation’s continuation if it suffers any losses or shortages in liquidity.
Deputies also rejected changing the title of the SSC director to chief executive officer.
Meanwhile, the Lower House designated next Sunday’s session to discuss the issue of Jordanian prisoners in Israel, especially the six currently on hunger strike.
The House said it will also designate a session in the next two weeks to discuss the “chaotic” situation in the labour market, and the impact of foreign labourers on job opportunities for Jordanians.
Meanwhile, both houses of Parliament will hold a joint session on the amended draft passports and civil status law.
The Upper House has twice rejected an article in the bill on stating the title and profession of the passport holder, an article the Lower House has approved.
Hence, a joint session will be held as per Article 92 of the Constitution.
