‘Election commission to monitor, not manage municipal polls’

25-06-2013 06:04 AM

Ammon News - AMMAN (Petra) — Independent Elections Commission (IEC) Spokesperson Hussein Bani Hani on Monday said the agency will be supervising upcoming municipal elections, slated for August 27, and not managing them.

He said the polls will be managed by the Municipal Affairs Ministry, citing Article 25 of the Municipalities Law.

Bani Hani added that the IEC will monitor and follow up on measures taken by the ministry during the elections without interference in any of the regulations and procedures set by the government.

He also said that all regulations related to the elections, including the registration, nomination, voting and counting processes will be the task of the ministry, with the IEC only providing advice, suggestions and notes on the polls.

He added that the commission will deploy around 1,980 monitors at polling centres around the Kingdom.
