Princess Basma highlights importance of volunteer work

17-06-2013 03:37 PM

Ammon News - AMMAN (Petra) — HRH Princess Basma on Sunday said the difficult economic conditions the country is witnessing highlights the importance of volunteer work as a form of social capital that can be translated into economic value.

Speaking at the launch of the 17th Arab Voluntary Work Camp, the princess noted that without volunteerism there would be a noticeable deterioration in people’s living standards, forcing the government and the private sector to bear the burden of providing them with services.

“Through voluntary work, young people prove to everyone that they are capable of shaping vital economic and social dynamics that are worth support and recognition, creating a chance for a better life for those who suffer from poverty,” Princess Basma said.

She noted that the camp, organised by the Higher Youth Council (HYC) in cooperation with the Arab League under the theme “youth and development”, is yet another example of the younger generation’s ability to effect change and engage in development efforts, such as combating poverty and migration from rural to urban areas.

For his part, HYC President Sami Majali said the camp provides an opportunity to focus on young people’s growing interest in volunteer work and eagerness to engage in the development process.

During the 10-day camp, young Arabs from 11 countries will take part in voluntary work and pay field visits to a number of institutions concerned with volunteer work.
