House resumes state budget debate

17-06-2013 02:30 PM

Ammon News - AMMAN (Petra) – The Lower House on Sunday resumed a lengthy debate of the 2013 temporary state budget law and independent governmental units' budget bill in a session chaired by Speaker Saad Hayel Srour and attended by Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour.

Taking the podium first in Sunday's session, MP Mohammad Dahrawi said the debate was long overdue, arguing that half of the budget had been spent and other spending had been set well in advance, noting that all budgets are the same, beset with deficit and should win International Monetary Fund approval, according to the lawmaker.

He questioned the government's ability to achieve better growth figures than the previous year in a turbulent and unstable region that had hit all sectors as the government is unable to provide thousands of jobs to address unemployment.

Also taking the floor in another day in the marathon debate, deputy after deputy blasted the government for raising prices and aired a series of demands for their constituencies, particularly in areas reeling under severe economic hardship.

The House is expected to vote on the budget Monday.
