Ammon News - AMMAN (Petra) – Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour on Tuesday met Muslim members of Britain's House of Lords and House of Commons and said Jordan is interested in further cementing the "historic" friendship between Jordan and the United Kingdom.

Ensour briefed the parliamentarians on comprehensive reforms Jordan is carrying out, noting the significant amendments to the Jordanian constitution, the setting up of the Independent Elections Commission and the Constitutional Court and holding parliamentary elections.

He further spoke of the huge burdens Jordan had borne throughout history to receive waves of forced migrations, including two million Palestinian refugees whose cause, he said, has been in limbo, and the last of which was the Kingdom's hosting of about half a million Syrian refugees.

The Syrian refugee exodus, he said, had brought pressures on the Kingdom's poor resources and infrastructure in many sectors, praising Britain's support for the Kingdom to bear the burdens and costs of hosting the Syrian refugees, and calling on the international community to share the responsibility towards the displaced Syrians.

Regarding the Palestinian issue, the Prime Minister said Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, had been a staunch supporter of the two-state solution to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The British parliamentarians commended Jordan's efforts to provide aid to Syrian refugees and they also acknowledged the reform plans carried out in the country.

They further said that efforts should be made to find a lasting solution to the Palestinian issue, stressing that the United States has a key role to play in jumpstarting the peace process to bring about the hoped-for regional peace and security.
