Ammon News - AMMONNEWS — Jordan's military tribunal on Monday handed prison sentences to seven Jordanians who attempted to cross the border into neighboring Syria allegedly to join the opposition fighters there.
The State Security Court (SSC) sentenced the defendants to two and a half years in prison for their attempt to infiltrate into Syria.
The defendants include Jordanian citizens Hassan Dhayf Allah, Zuhair Hamdan, Hassan Abdul Rahman, Muhammad Atwa, Hussein Abu Shabab, Mustafa Al Issa, and Ali Atta Salem.
Earlier in April, authorities arrested a group of eight Jihadi Salafists near the Jordanian-Syrian border who allegedly attempted to cross into Syria to join Jihadist fighters against the forces of Bashar al-Assad's regime, a military source said.
The men reportedly had several weapons in their possession at the time of the arrest, including semi-automatic rifles and cashes of explosives, a report by the Jordan Times earlier in April said.
On Monday, a leader of the hardliner Salafist Jihadist current in Jordan told Ammon News that over 50 Jordanian Jihadi fighters have been killed in the conflict in Syria.
Mohammad Al-Shalabi, known as Abu Sayyaf, said that over 500 of the movement's members have crossed into Syria and are fighting regime forces along side opposition fighters, Free Syrian Army, and Al Nusra Front.
