Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Israel's ambassador in Jordan returned back to Israel last week to mourn the death of his father, an Israeli diplomatic source said on Thursday a day after Jordan officially confirmed that the ambassador left the Kingdom immediately after being summoned by the Jordanian Foreign Ministry.

An Israeli diplomatic source denied in statements to The Times of Israel that Ambassador Daniel Nevo was given a "reprimand" by the Jordanian government over what it considered escalating Israeli violations in occupied Jerusalem.

The source said that Nevo was back in Israel only to mourn the passing of his father.

The newspaper added that the source acknowledged a "palpable worsening in diplomatic relations with Jordan," saying that "There is a raising of the tone lately.. We don't know to what extent this is about us, or about internal Jordanian politics."

The Jordanian government officially confirmed on Wednesday that the Israeli Ambassador left last week and did not return back to Jordan after he was summoned by Jordan's Deputy Foreign Minister and Minister of Interior Hussein Majali, who asked Nevo to relay a "strongly-worded message" to his government of Jordan's denunciation and concern over escalating violations in Al Aqsa Mosque and occupied Jerusalem.

The Israeli diplomatic statements come amid a row between Jordan's government and parliament over the latter's request to expel the Israeli Ambassador and recall Jordan's ambassador, Walid Obeidat, from Tel Aviv.

The Lower House of Parliament had voted unanimously last week to ask the government to expel the Israeli Ambassador, followed by a motion backed by nearly 87 MPs who threatened to their confidence in the government over its lack of action in implementing its request.

Government spokesperson Mohammad Momani had told Ammon News on Tuesday that Jordan is mulling diplomatic, political, and legal measures against Israel.

The government sufficed to summoning the Israeli ambassador and relaying its denunciation, and is not obliged to commit to the Lower House's non-binding vote to expel the ambassador and recall its own envoy from Tel Aviv.

Jordan's measures came in response to Israel's actions in preventing Muslim worshippers from entering Al Aqsa Mosque, and Israeli forces facilitating the storming of Jewish settlers into the Mosque's yard.

Jordan also expressed denunciation of Israeli forces' brief detention of Jerusalem's mufti last week.
