Opposition may not partake in Friends of Syria meeting: Minister

15-05-2013 08:01 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan reiterated on Wednesday the urgency of putting an immediate end to the conflict in neighboring Syria, stressing the need for a political solution to the crisis that has left nearly 100,000 killed and millions displaced.

Jordan's government spokesperson said on Wednesday that the Syrian opposition is not likely to take part in the "Friends of Syria" meeting, slated to be held in Amman next week.

The Friends of Syria group, which includes Jordan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Egypt, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Turkey, Germany, and Italy, will hold a foreign ministerial meeting in the middle of next week, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry announced.

Government spokesperson Mohammad Momani, who is also the State Minister for Media Affairs and Communications, said during a press conference on Wednesday that Jordan is daunted at the stance of the international community towards the burden Jordan is carrying in hosting over half a million Syrian refugees, and the dangers of a possible spillover of the crisis.

"The [Syrian crisis] concerns Jordan's national security and stability, yet despite that, we will not close the borders," Momani said.

He added that Jordan's humanitarian duty and International law prevent Jordan from closing the borders in the face of hundreds of thousands of refugees flooding into Jordan escaping the ongoing conflict in neighboring Syria.

Momani reiterated Jordan's refusal to be part of any military intervention in Syria, which shares with Jordan over 300 kilometers of borders.
