World Bank tells Jordan to raise electricity prices

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The World Bank reportedly urged Jordanian decision-makers to raise prices of electricity services in the kingdom, in a measure to alleviate the accumulated losses the state incurred in previous years.

The World Bank presented Jordan with several suggestions, including the need to limit subsidies and commodities relieved from sales taxes, and called for imposing new taxes on various sectors, Al Ghad daily reported.

The World Bank recommendations to raise prices stirred major protests and riots last November when the government decided to lift subsidies from gasoline and oil derivatives, causing a major hike in prices that further overburdened citizens amid difficult economic conditions in the Kingdom.
