Police arrest manhole covers thief

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Police on Thursday arrested a man suspecting of stealing metal covers of manholes and sewage and drainage systems.

The man was arrested in Balqaa' governorate, northwest of Amman, and reportedly admitted to stealing the metal manhole covers to "make a living," according to police.

The uncovered manholes caused the death of one person and injured many others as victims fall into the uncovered holes.

Police had announced that 380 metal covers were stolen from street manholes and sewage systems.

Since his appointment, Minister of Water and Irrigation Hazem Nasser has formed investigation teams in cooperation with criminal investigation units to track the manhole cover thieves.

The young man arrested Thursday admitted that he is part of a "gang" that specializes in stealing metal covers and selling them as metal scrap.
