Ammon News - IRBID (Petra) – Police arrested three people on Tuesday following a shooting on the Yarmouk University campus during a brawl between a youth and students.

There were no reports of casualties during the incident, the latest in an upsurge of violence at the Kingdom's universities.

Officials at Yarmouk University, located in the northern city of Irbid, said the young man had fired shots in the air from a revolver, then fled the campus after being chased by students. The youth was arrested by a police patrol stationed outside the university's gates.

Yarmouk University media spokesman Yousef Tbeishat said an investigation will seek to identify those responsible for the latest incident and officials will move "to take legal action against those behind it, according to the university's regulations and instructions." Irbid Police Director Brig. Abdul Wali Shakhanbeh said three persons, who were not students, were apprehended outside the campus and the gunman is thought to be among them. Shakhanbeh said an investigation is underway.

Separately, a brawl broke out between two groups of students at Irbid National University, in which a number of students were lightly hurt and buildings and facilities attacked.

Police were called in and restored order on the campus, scene of similar scuffles and a separate shooting incident last week.
