Former Intelligence Chief Asfoura Dies

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Former Jordanian Intelligence chief Samih Asfoura died on Sunday at the age of 70.

Major General Asfoura headed the General Intelligence Department (GID) beginning in May 2005, and resigned seven moths after his appointment, shortly after the triple hotel suicide bombings that struck in Amman on November 9th, 2005. He was succeeded by Major General Mohammad Dhahabi.

Samih Asfoura was career intelligence officer from Al-Mafraq, east of the Jordanian capital, Amman. He is a father of four children and trained as a lawyer before joining Jordanian Intelligence. Much of his intelligence career was spent in counterterrorism operations.

Asfoura served as chief of operations at the GID before his appointment by King Abdullah II as Director on 5 May 2005. After a seven-month tenure as director, he announced a decision to leave the GID following the triple hotel bombings in Amman.
A funeral was held for Asfoura on Sunday, with a funeral procession from King Hussein Mosque to Sweileh cemetery, where he was buried.
