Ammon News - AMMONNEWS-Jordan’s U-19 football team was eliminated from the first round of the 2nd Arab Youth Cup ahead of today’s semis. Libya will face Saudi Arabia while Algeria plays Tunisia with the winners qualifying to the July 18 final. Jordan finished last in Group A after they were held 0-0 by Sudan, 1-1 by Saudi Arabia and lost 1-0 to Kuwait. The July 4-18 event brought together 12 teams in three groups, with the top team from each group and the best second-placed team moving to the semis. Observer noted the team had played well but agreed with head coach Jamal Abu Abed’s assessment that the team’s failure to convert into goals was a “major shortcoming”. Officials noted the event was a stepping stone as the team prepared for the U-19 Asian Youth Championship in the UAE November 4-17 where Jordan is in Group C with titleholders North Korea, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. Despite the Arab Cup result, the team’s ultimate aim would be the Asian Championship and qualification to the Youth World Cup.
