Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan's largest opposition party Islamic Action Front (IAF) on Sunday voiced rejection of the country's plans for building a nuclear reactor.
The IAF, the political arm of Muslim Brotherhood, said at a press conference that the move will harm the environment and lead to dangerous consequences, and does not serve the interests of Jordanians.
Focusing on nuclear energy will entail ignoring other projects that rely on the renewable energy, IAF Secretary General Hamzah Mansour said, calling for cancelling the nuclear project.
Energy-poor Jordan, which imports about 96 percent of its energy needs annually, is planning to build several nuclear reactors for power generation.
The kingdom has signed nuclear cooperation agreements with countries such as France, Turkey and South Korea.
Jordan is supposed to announce the site of its first nuclear reactor and the technology to be used in the reactor by the end of 2012.
