Ammon News - AMMONNEWS — The 19th annual run of the LG International Dead Sea Ultra Marathon is set to be held on April 6 with the participation of more than 8,000 runners representing 50 countries.
The event, held under the patronage of HRH Prince Firas, president of the Society for Care of Neurological Patients (SCNP), is expected to contribute to the tourism sector of the Kingdom, according to organisers.
“The marathon has witnessed rising national and international recognition over the years. It has a successful record of accomplishments since it first started, marking an important milestone in 2011 with over 7,500 people running the marathon in support for a very important cause that is fully dedicated to the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases,” said Prince Firas in a statement.
During the main press conference on Sunday, Jamil Mujahed, SCNP vice president, said: “The marathon has grown from 10 to over 7,500 runners from all over the world. The remarkable growth of the marathon has been essential in promoting the work of the SCNP which continues to provide needy neurological patients with medical aid and covers the costs of necessary surgeries. The marathon has contributed so far in the treatment of more than 1,500 patients at a value of one million Jordanian dinars.”
Haitham Jweinat, Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) city manager, said: “GAM’s support for the marathon is up to par with our mission to actively take part in sporting events all over Jordan, specifically those that promote tourism and culture while engaging and serving our citizens, and what makes the marathon even more significance is that it supports neurological patients. Being able to successfully organise such an event for 19 years reflects the great efforts put forth by both the marathon and the society.”
LG Electronics has been a supporter of the cause of the marathon since its inception.
“LG is proud to be part of the marathon for the 19th year in a row which signifies the commitment to this noble cause which holds athletic, humane and social amplitude at the same time, especially since we at LG believe in local community service and developing it in all aspects,” said LG Electronics Levant Managing Director Tae Hun Ryu.
Last year, Jordanian runners dominated the scene with Suleiman Al Ghudran taking the top spot of the 50km after clocking 2h59m52s, leaving Fathi Dayat in second place with 3h00m24s and Motasem Akawi in third spot with 3h04m54s.
American Jenn Shelton conquered the 50km women’s category in 3h21m16s, followed by Marie Perin of France (3h54m17s) and Maria Clementi of the US (3h54m19s).
SCNP member Ghazi Farouq said that runners will be able to take part in five separate categories: the ultra marathon (50km), the marathon (42km), the half marathon (21km), the 10km and the kids marathon (4.2km).
“We are working closely with all parties to have a safe and enjoyable event. Jordan Athletic Federation will provide referees and legal aspects of the marathon,” Farouq said.
“In addition, several roads will be closed so everyone can have a good time and we will be sending information through the media on what roads to take during the event,” he added.
