Opposition figure calls on West to intervene to protect Jordanian human rights

AMMONNEWS- The prominent opposition figure Toujan Faisal called on the West to open their court systems to try cases of human rights violations in Jordan and developing countries and to protect public fund from exploitation.

She said in a press conference held iher house on Monday in Khalda west of Amman that the west has to freeze the assets of all suspect organizations and individuals.

Toujan Faisal is a prominent political figure, former parliament member and a journalist. detained several times for her political views, and she was tried by the state Security court (SSC).

Her last detention and imprisonment was during Ali Abu Raghib's government (2001-2003), she was released after being jailed for 100 days including the last 20 days in the hospital in a special pardon after she was charged with offending the King's dignity, and giving false informations.


Durng the press conference Faisal revealed an official letter that shows transferring the ownership of 3000 donoms of state land to individuals including members of the Royal Family.

She indicated that a major part of what was advanced in the "Arab Spring" was championed by her as early as 1989, and later when she was a member of parliament 1993.

Faisal- who partially lost her hearing in jail- also accused the state of abusing her, destroying her family life, and violating her human rights while she was in jail.

the prison sentence was used as a legal means against her to prevent her from ever running for parliamentary elections, she added.

Faisal emphasized that she doesn't feel secure and she fears for her life to the point that she accepted Security personnel to protect her and accompany her to visit the southern governorate of Karak for a speech she was going to give there recently.

She believes that the government indebted to her both morally and financially after the government's attempts to destroy her personal and political carrier according to her expression.

The press conference was attended by many political figures and supporters of her and others among them former head of the Jordan Bar Association (JBA) and her personal lawyer, Professor of nuclear physics and political activist Jaser Shobaki, Jamal Tahat political activists.


Faisal showed solidarity with the so-called Popular Movement for Reform and Tafilah's activists who were detained last week after Friday's rally.

Her only source of financial income has been through her journalism work, according to a close friend of her.

She claimed that King Abdullah II initiated contact with her through his brother Prince Ali early in the king's reign, and she expressed her reform ideas to the prince.

she was hoping at that time that a working relationship would start with the king just like what she used to have with the late King Hussein Bin Talal.
