Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Senator Laila Sharaf on Tuesday confirmed her resignation from the Upper House of Parliament, citing declining to serve the "state of corruption."
Sharaf submitted her resignation letter to Senate President Taher Masri Tuesday afternoon, despite Masri's attempts to dissuade her from her decision.
Sharaf told Ammon News "Yes I submitted my resignation from the Senate because I do not want to serve in a corrupt state" adding that she will serve Jordan through her work with civil society organizations.
She noted the case of her son, Faris Sharaf, who was asked to submit his resignation from his position as Governor of the Central Bank of Jordan "because he attempted to combat corruption" according to her expression.
She blasted the decision to oust Faris Sharaf nearly 10 months into the job, expressing her dismay at the government's decision to shake up the Central Bank, "the institution that attempts to maintain the security of the nation," and considered the decision a violation of the sanctity of the institution.
Senate President Taher Masri met with Sharaf prior to her resignation but the latter seemed persistent on her move.
Sharaf's reisgnation comes a day after the official announcement of the resignation of her son, Faris Sharaf, as head of the Jordan Central Bank amidst official obscurity over the reason Sharaf was asked to submit his resignation less than 10 months into the job.
Laila Sharaf is a former Minister of Media Affairs, and had resigned from her position in 1984 over what she considered as state encroachment on press freedoms. Her late husband, Abdul Hamid Sharaf, was a former Prime Minister and held several other high positions in the state before he passed away in 1980.
