LONDON OLYMPICS: JORDAN CAN BENEFIT

29-06-2011 12:00 AM

Ammon News - Next summer, the eyes of the world will turn to London for the biggest on earth – the 2012 Olympic Games.

AMMONNEWS - What do the Olympic Games mean to young Jordanians? What do they know of the host city London? How do young Jordanians see the relationship between their country and the UK? And how would they like to use the Olympics to benefit Jordan?

These are some of the questions that will be debated by a selected group of young people from across the Kingdom as part of a project lead by the British Embassy in Amman in coordination with a number of local NGOs. The group of about 52 Jordanians ages 15 to 22 will then paint the whole Embassy perimeter wall with murals depicting their impressions of the Olympics, the UK and Jordan.

The project was launched today at the British Ambassador’s Residence. The Ambassador Peter Millett said: “I am determined to highlight the London Olympics as a way to bring a lasting interest among Jordanians in the importance of sport. So it was a real pleasure to meet the young Jordanians who will be part of this fun project. They are excited about sharing their thoughts and ideas and translating them into pictures that will cover the walls of the Embassy for the coming year. I am really looking forward to seeing the results of this group’s creativity.”

The group was selected by Princess Basma Youth Resource Centre, Al-Aman Fund for the Future of the Orphans and UNRWA .

The group includes 22 girls and 30 boys.

The painting day will be at the end of July to mark the one year to go to the Olympics, and will be open to the public to come and join the fun.
