Ammon News - AMMAN - More Jordanian families are enrolling their children in private schools, a Department of Statistics "Household Income and Expenditure" survey for year 2010 revealed.
The 2010 survey showed that 72.7 percent of Jordanians over 4 years old are enrolled in public schools and institutions, compared to 74.4 percent in 2002, a decline of 1.7 percent.
The highest percentage of individuals enrolled in public schools was registered in the southern Ma'an governorate (95.4%), followed by Mafraq governorate, east of the kingdom (94.6%).
There was a 3 percent increase in students enrolling in private schools, reaching 21 percent of students in Jordan over 4 years old (a total of 1.6 million students) are enrolled in private schools in 2010, compared to 18 percent in 2002.
According to the survey, students in Amman registered the highest enrollment in private schools, 31.4 percent, compared to 24.6 percent in 2002, followed by students in Aqaba, where 26.2 percent of them study in private schools, compared to 18.3 percent in 2002.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Education, over 5,000 students transferred from private to public schools this summer, while under 300 transferred from public to private schools.
