Teachers threaten to boycott elections in escalating measures

25-08-2010 12:00 AM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Committee to Revive the Teachers' Association issued a statement on Wednesday calling on the government to retract all decisions it took in regards to referring teachers to early retirement, relocation of job posts, and retirement after they took part in teachers' demands to revive a teachers' professional association.

The committee warned in the statement that teachers will resort to escalating measures, to include boycotting the upcoming parliamentary elections and carrying out demonstrations and culminating in going on strike if the government does not meet the rights and needs of teachers, according to the statement.

The teachers noted in the statement that their conditions have deteriorated as a result of policies by successive governments, and that this current government has not dealt any more effectively with them, but rather used punitive measures against those "who call for achieving justice, giving rights, and correcting the path" that characterizes government's policies towards teachers.

The teachers called on the government to withdraw all "political decisions" related to referring a number of teachers to early retirement, relocation of job posts, and retirement.

The statement stressed that teachers will not back down from their demands to establish a teachers' professional association to regulate their affairs and safeguard their rights, in addition to moving the public education process forward.

The statement stressed that the teachers' movement stems out of a professional and occupational context and is not related to any political, partisan agenda or to implement any personal political agendas.
