Ammon News - AMMAN The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) will double its efforts and contacts with donor countries to secure more financial aid, the agency top official said Monday.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Filippo Grandi made the remarks during a meeting with Director of Palestinian Affairs Department Wajih Azayzeh and heads of refugee camps improvement committees.
The agency, he said, had suffered a severe financial crisis by the end of 2009, adding that former Commissioner General Karen Abu Zeid helped secure money from a number of countries.
Grandi said the plot to end the agency services and destroy the refugees' right of return is always raised by a number of countries that are "ineffective" on the international community.
The commissioner talked about the agency's financial crisis, noting that the donor countries have increased their contributions.
However, he said, the support is not enough to cover population growth and needed services.
"One country has suspended its donations for the agency," Grandi said.
UNRWA will ask donors to provide enough financial support to provide services for 13 refugee camps in Jordan, he said.
Azayzeh, on his part, asked for more coordination and cooperation to better serve Palestinian refugees in Jordan, noting that UNRWA provides services for more than 100,000 poor families across the kingdom's camps.
