AMMONNEWS - Security forces Sunday clashed with rioters in Hay al-Tafayleh neighborhood in east Amman after the young man, Saddem al-Saud was pronounced dead at al-Bashir Hospital.
Security forces used tear gas to disperse angry rioters, who were throwing rocks at Jabal al-Taj Security Center, damaging public and private property in the surrounding area. Gendarmarie forces interfered to prevent rioters from storming and attacking the Jabal al-Taj Security Center.
Rioters set vehicles on fire, broke glass, threw explosive bottles, and attacked passing cars expressing their anger at the death of Saddem al-Saud, who they claim died as a result of injuries he sustained after being “tortured” by security forces at al-Hussein Security Center last month. Security forces enhanced their presence in areas surrounding Jabal al-Taj and Jabal al-Joufeh in east Amman without entering the streets and alleys of the neighborhood.
Eyewitnesses told "Ammon" that a resident was injured and transferred to al-Bashir Hospital as a result of clashes.
The situation was calming down towards the evening hours according to former Minister of Higher Education and Deputy Rateb al-Saud, after clashes had intensified throughout the day on Sunday.
Al-Saud told "Ammon" that the family of the diseased agreed to receive the body of the young man, Saddem, and bury him on Monday after noon-prayer, stressing that the Ministry of Interior and higher commands in the Public Security Directorate are studying the situation very seriously in guaranteeing justice for al-Saud’s family.
Head of Public Relations of the Gendarmerie Forces, Chief Ahmad Abu Hammad, said that (6) members of the Gendarmerie Forces were hurt, (4) of which were hit by gunfire and were transferred to the hospital. He added that investigation is ongoing to find out who fired shots at the forces.
He added that on Sunday morning, a group of rioters in Hay al-Tafayleh attacked passing cars and set fires in the streets, throwing explosive bottles at the Security booth, setting it on fire, causing Gendarmerie Forces to interfere to restore security and order in the area.
Abu Hammad noted that as soon as Gendarmerie Forces arrived, they were faced with gunfire from rioters, causing them to resort to using tear gas to disperse rioters and protect public and private property from attacks.
It is noted that a security official is working diligently with tribal and community leaders to contain the situation that began in the early hours on Sunday in Hay al-Tafayleh after Saddem al-Saud was pronounced died.
The security official said that the Security Command initiated a proposal to console the al-Tafeileh tribes in Jabal al-Taj, but the family had refused to negotiate anything before they identify the "assailants," according to their expression, and disclose the results of the investigation carried out by the Director of the Public Security Directorate, Major General Mazen Turki al-Qadi, last month to uncover the individuals that tortured al-Saud.
The source reported that the Security Command refused to reach an agreement with the family of the diseased through a security "Attwah" (a grace/truce period given in tribal code systems to maintain calm between disputing parties until final reconciliation agreements).
The source refuted the term "Security Atwah" to denote the consolation understanding that took place last month between security forces and relatives when al-Saud was admitted to the hospital, noting that what occurred earlier was an attempt to console the family and calm their anger rather than an “Atwah.”
Schools in Hay Al-Tafaylah Sunday delayed releasing students from schools fearing for the children's safety. The students remained inside schools until later Sunday afternoon.
Eye witnesses told "Ammon" that hundreds of rioters in Jabal al-Taj and Jabal al-Joufeh throughout the day were storming to the main streets, causing chaos and attacking security forces and then hiding back in their homes.
Rioters set a vehicle belonging to the Electricity Company and a security booth on fire and attacked members of the Criminal Investigation Unit that entered the neighborhood.
Security forces, including Gendarmerie and Public Security members enhanced their presence throughout the road leading from Al-Bashir Hospital in Al-Ashrafiyyeh area to Hay al-Tafayleh in Jabal al-Taj and Jabal al-Joufeh.
Rioting began in Al-Bashir Hospital in east Amman early on Sunday after Saddem al-Saud died as a result of injuries he sustained weeks ago during a fight between him and a street vendor, in addition to family members of both, in Jabal al-Hussein.
Relatives of al-Saud claim that the injuries Saddem al-Saud sustained were not a result of the fight with the street vendor; they rather accused members of the Public Security Forces of torturing al-Saud inside al-Hussein Security Center after the fight.
The incident that occurred at al-Hussein Security Center led the Public Security Directorate to propose a “Security Atwah" time period to contain the situation until further details are revealed.
Gendarmerie Forces surrounded al-Bashir Hospital and blockaded the area to prevent relatives of al-Saud to storm into the hospital area, and used tear gas to disperse the rioters.
Family members of Saddem al-Saud, who worked for Greater Amman Municipality, accuse officials from Criminal Investigation in al-Hussein Security Center of torturing al-Saud causing internal bleeding in the brain and going into a coma as a result of successive blows to the head.
