Egypt's President appoints new Minister of Defense
Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has appointed Abdel-Maguid Sakr as the Minister of Defence, promoting him to the rank of lieutenant-general, according to Egyptian media sources.
Sakr will succeed Mohamed Zaki, commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces and minister of defence and military production since June 2018.
The new Cabinet, led by incumbent Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and comprising 30 ministers, will take the oath before President El-Sisi later on Wednesday.
Sakr was born in 1955. In September 2018, he was appointed as the governor of Suez.
He held several positions, including assistant minister of defence in 2015, chief of military police, and later deputy chief of military police.
Lieutenant-General Sakr has received numerous awards and medals, including the Military Duty Decoration (First Class) and the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
He holds a Master's degree in military science from Nasser Military Academy and a Bachelor's degree in military science from the Military Academy.
